Richard Davidson Winters was born in Oakville, Texas; the son of Benjamin Franklin Winters and Sylvania Adeline "Vaney" Cude.

While serving in Louisiana during the Civil War, he was hospitalized for a period for an illness. It's possible that it was during this time that Richard met his future wife, Louisa Jane Redden, a native of Farmerville in northern Louisiana.
