Notes on Mary Elizabeth Atkinson (Massingill)

Mary was always sick.
At one point, they went to Alabama. Albert said "we" so It must have been after he was born and old enough to remember. Her illness got better when she was in Alabama.
On the day of Mary's death, she gathered all her children around her bed and prayed. She became much sicker that evening. They took her to the door and let her look out and around over the corn field. This would be her last time. She called Albert to the bed and took his hand. She said "Albert, be a good boy." She said she would be going to Heaven and she would be waiting for him there. She said "There is a big band of Angels that are going to bring me home tonight". And she said "You be a good boy and live right". He said "There was a time I couldn't meet her." "But thank God, he let me live".
Mary's grandfather John "Broke Leg" Conatser, hired a Massingale girl (Becky Massingale)
to stay with him, his wife and daughter.
John "Got to following around with that girl and got mest up". (pregnant) John left his family and took her (Becky Massingale) to Kentucky until after Mary was born. Becky died while in Kentucky. [It is not known if Becky died in childbirth]. John buried Becky in Kentucky. [Becky was 14 years old when Mary was born]
John brought Mary (as a baby) back to his home in Tennessee. Mary stayed with them for a short while. John then took Mary to stay with his son Phil Conatser. Mary stayed with them for a while then Phil took to live with a woman that lived near the court house. [Name unknown]. This was when Mary was old enough to walk. "The old woman made her sleep in a little old crib of a thing". The old woman would not let Mary eat, so when Mary went out to slop the hogs, she would flip bread out of the slop bucket and eat it. "That was hard times."
Finally John came up and bought (sic) and took her to took her to court. John had Mary "bound out." At that time Charles Atkinson (son of Lewis Atkinson and brother of Francis Atkinson) took her home. Charles bought some bed ticking and wrapped Mary up and took her home on a horse. [Mary must have not even had anything to wear]
"He raised her up till she was a right smart sized girl." Mary stayed with them and worked for them till she got married to Granville Atkinson.
Charles died of typhoid fever.
Mary was married in 1893 and Albert was born in 1894.
