In 1919 when Andrew's business failed, Edith took the girls to New York City where she chaperoned and guided them as they found work in the film and modeling industries. Edith accompanied Norma to Hollywood when Irving Thalberg of Louis B. Mayer Pictures invited her to visit and make a screen test. A contract followed, and Norma and Edith moved to Hollywood, living together until Norma's marriage to Irving Thalberg several years later. In the meantime, Athole, and eventually Douglas, would also build lives in the Hollywood community. Athole married director Howard Hawks. Douglas became prominent and successful in the sound industry of the movie business, eventually winning several Oscars and contributing to hundreds of movies of that era. Edith lived to see all of her children become a part of the Golden Years of early Hollywood.
