Andrew Shearer of Scottish heritage worked as a lumber merchant in a family business in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 1899 he married Edith Fisher of Toronto, presenting her with a wedding gift of a two story home in Montreal, Quebec. Here they would raise their family until an economic downturn around 1919. This coupled with a reported depressive condition resulted in Andrew losing his family business, his home, and experiencing greatly reduced circumstances.
Eventually, the children - Douglas, Athole, and Norma - created successes in the early Golden Years of Hollywood, becoming a part of that community as they married and made families of their own. Andrew would eventually join them in California and remarry later in life after he and Edith divorced.
