She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church where she was twice Past President of the Christian Home Class, member of Chairman of History and the Records and Achieves Committee University of Tennessee Presidents Trust. Florence graduated from the University of Tennessee Junior College 1929-1931, then The University of Tennessee Knoxville BS Education 1933.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Russell Willis Hillis born Greenfield, Tenn. on December 8, 1914 died Knoxville, Tenn. November 15, 1992. They were married on March 15, 1941 at in her family home on 219 Popular Street at Martin Tenn.
Florence was the daughter of Leonidas Augustus Elliott born January 2, 1877 in Martin and died there on January 3, 1948 and Pearl Blakemore
born Dresden, Tenn. born September 30, 1878 died Nashville, Tenn. July 5, 1960.
She was the youngest of 4 sisters Rebecca Elliott 1899-1919, Pearlee Elliott Henegar 1903-1975 who preceded her.
She is survived by her only son, Stephen Lee Hillis; daughter in law, Sherry Ray Hillis; 2 grandchildren, Dr. Angela Ray Hillis and Sgt. Adam Blakemore Hillis of USAF; 2 great granddaughters born to Adam and Courtney S. Hillis, Kielyn Makenna Hillis born May 17, 2007 and Kherington Blakemore born September 3, 2008; sister, Edith Mae Elliott Davies 1909 of McMinnville Tenn.; niece, Rebecca Davies Grissom of Chattanooga; and nephew, Thomas Lee Henegar of Nashville.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley St., Knoxville TN, 37902.
