St. George, UT - Our noble father, Edgar LaVell Goodwin, 88, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in St. George, Utah. He was born March 3, 1922 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Joseph Edgar Goodwin and Helen Edna Parsons. He married Grace LaRue Cobbley April 2, 1942 in the Mesa Arizona Temple just prior to his departure for overseas Naval duty in the 2nd world war. He served in the Solomon Islands as a Carpenter's mate first class repairing PT boats during the South Pacific campaign. Dad and Mom served as missionaries for the LDS Church four different times during their lifetime together. The first mission was 3 ½ years in New Zealand where he served in the presidency of the Building Mission there. This required them to move their large family to the other side of the world. He tutored local young men, who had been called as labor missionaries, in the building trades. This blessed not only the building program but the young men, as they learned skills that prepared them to provide for their families. Many became his lifelong friends. The second mission was in the Northwestern States where he served as the head of the LDS Church's Building Program in that area. The third mission was a proselyting mission to British Columbia in Canada for 1 ½ years. They also served a Member-Locator mission. He and Mom also served as ordinance workers in the temple for 17 years. Service to the Lord was always a priority in his life. He served as Bishop and in many other stake and ward callings. Dad was a master builder and cabinet maker. He built hundreds of buildings, homes and chapels. He was always known for his quality workmanship and integrity. However, his most important building accomplishments were designing and building five different homes for his sweetheart and family. His greatest love in life was being a husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his seven children: Karen (JR) Hayes, Brent (Susan) Goodwin, Chris (Louise) Goodwin, Kay (Theron) Borrowman, Kent (Fern) Goodwin, Kathy (Kevin) Van Gilder, TeRia (Ross) Glauser. He had 43 grandchildren, 124 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren at the time of his passing. His life has been an incredible example of love, faith and devotion to his wife, family and friends and to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not the end of his life's mission - only the beginning of the next phase. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Morningside LDS Ward Chapel, 930 Morningside Drive, St. George, Utah at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation prior to services beginning at 9:00 a.m. No visitation will be held Friday evening. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
