Leota Edwards, owner and chief operating officer of Edwards Grocery, passed from this life Tuesday, Jan. 16 (2007) at her home in Harrison. She was an outstanding business and professional woman. She had received many honors in her life and in 1999 was the National Grocers Association's Independent Food Person of the Year.

Leota Edwards was born Jan. 9, 1922, at Valley Springs, one of 10 children of Eva Mae (Curnutt) and James Atchley. She was a 1940 graduate of Valley Springs High School and attended Southern Methodist University. She worked for the government during World War II and married Frank Edwards in 1944. In 1950, she and her husband started a grocery and feed store on the banks of Crooked Creek in Harrison where the levee now stands. In 1961, the store was destroyed by Harrison's great flood. Her husband, Frank, passed away at the age of 44 in 1963, but she continued the store with her husband's nephew, Billy Ed Hefley, as manager in its present location.

She is survived by three children, Billy Edwards of the home, Sharon Capps and husband Bill of Harrison and Eddie Mark Edwards and wife Cindy of Harrison; five grandchildren, Chandra Perrine and husband Alan of Orlando, Fla., Shawn Capps of Conway, Kellie Pledger and husband Jason of Rogers, Tommy Frank Edwards of Harrison and Samantha Cope and husband John of Harrison; one brother, J.T. Atchley of Harrison; two sisters, Lorene Atchley of Harrison and Betty Malham of Cabot; and over 30 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Flem, Elam and Ray Atchley; and three sisters, Minnie Atchley, Amo Redus and Mary Perl Johnson.

Mrs. Edwards was a founding board member of Community First Bank in Harrison and was the only woman to sit on the board of Affiliated Foods Southwest in Little Rock. She was a member of Northside Church of Christ, 20th Century Club, Chi Sigma Sorority and a past board member of RSVP. She was the Arkansas Retail Grocers Association's Woman of the Year in 1986, this award presented by then Governor Bill Clinton and in 1999 was the Independent Grocery Person of the Year. She was a third generation native of Boone County and loved Arkansas and its people.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Northside Church of Christ with Steve Powers officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Holt Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Ed Hefley, Billy Rogers, Eddie Dillon, Rick Baker, Jim Atchley, Tom Atchley and Michael Malham. Honorary pallbearers include Community First Bank board members, Affiliated Food Southwest board members and employees of Edwards Grocery.
