Alfred Gordon Gaydon F.R.S. known to his friends as Dick. His was an example of triumph over adversity. In earlier life he suffered severe and permanent visual impairment, yet went on to hold the Chair of Molecular Spectroscopy in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology of Imperial College, London. The Rumford Medal is awarded every two years to those who make "an outstandingly important recent discovery in the field of thermal or optical properties of matter made by a scientist working in Europe". Alfred was awarded this medal in 1960. One of his publications was "Flames: Their Structure, Radiation and Temperature" and he co-wrote several others. His mother's maiden name was Geach. In 1948, he travelled to the U.S.A. apparently to lecture at Wisconsin University.
