The 79-year-old Clarkston resident died of causes related to age Saturday at his home.

In 1967, he was appointed as Clarkston's first full-time fire chief and served until retiring in 1972.

He was born March 8, 1925, in Cheney, Wash., to Isaac and Laura Harmon. He attended Cheney schools and graduated from high school there. In 1936, he graduated from Eastern Washington College of Education at Cheney and served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a clerk typist at Hanford, Wash., and Maxwell Field, Ala.

He married Bernice Elizabeth Reith on Nov. 1, 1935, at Harrington, Wash. She died Aug. 12, 1992, at Clarkston.

After his discharge, he returned to Cheney, where he opened a real estate and insurance business.

He taught distributive education from 1948 to 1949 at Pasco High School and taught the same course the following year at Clarkston.

In 1951, he began working as a postal clerk and mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service at Clarkston. During this time he was also employed as a police dispatcher for the Clarkston Police Department and served as a member of the Clarkston Volunteer Fire Department until being appointed as fire chief.

During his tenure as chief, the present fire station was built and dedicated to him.

After a three-year retirement, he returned to the workforce in 1975 as a bookkeeper for the Federal Highway Administration, working out of Hope, Idaho, Grangeville, and McCall. He retired in 1989 and returned to Clarkston.

He had an avid interest in airlines and flew as a private pilot in his younger years. He enjoyed music and served as a bandleader during his college years. He learned to play electronic keyboards during his retirement.

Survivors include three daughters, Gale McLaughlin of Hope, Idaho, Diane Reno of Lewiston, and Gloria Hund of Clarkston; a sister, Vivian Bement of Kirkland, Wash., 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
