Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 11 Mar 1938
"William J. Dickson, aged 71 years, died early last Friday morning in the Cleveland Clinic Hospital, where he had gone Feb. 14 for a surgical operation which he realized was a most serious one. On leaving home he was cheerful and seemingly unafraid of the outcome, apparently hoping that he would soon be able to return free of his ailment. He was born in Ellsworth township, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Dickson. The family came to Canfield when he was a small boy and it had since been his home, where he was a most active citizen, always deeply interested in community affairs. It was a real pleasure for him to be of assistance to others, and that trait alone made for him a legion of friends. He had followed farming, but for quite a number of years was engaged in buying and selling live stock. For a long period he served as township clerk, an office he filled at the time of his passing. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and Argus Masonic Lodge. His wife was Minnie Jane Powers, who died May 26, 1935. He leaves two sons, J. Powers and Hugh M. Dickson, of Canfield; a daughter, Mrs. Helen McClave, Uhrichsville; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Middagh of New Concord and Mrs. W.A.S. Dickson of Brownsville, Ind.; a step-sister, Mrs. Lois Hartman of Long Beach, Calif., and three brothers, Roy and G.A.R. Dickson of Richmond, Ind., and Edgar of Homestead, Pa. His funeral, held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, was very largely attended, a mass of floral offerings being silent tribute to his memory. Rev. L. P. McCulloch in his sermon beautifully portrayed the well spent life of the deceased. Interment was made in the family plot in the village cemetery."
