Heinrich Koster and Ferdinand Ganahr were the first two Christian Missionaries to arrive in China at Hong Kong on March 19, 1847. They were from the Rhenish Society and were recruited by Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff, a German missionary to the Far East. Koster and Ganahr were to be sent to the western part of the Kwangtung Province where they were to distribute medicine to the natives, supervise the native preachers speaking the Punti dialect and learn Chinese. However, Heinrich Koster died six months after his arrival in China. His death most likely occurred in Hong Kong. By the end of the same year, Genahr moved to the village of Tai Ping, where he gathered a school and labored faithfully until 1861. His two works in Chinese have been very useful.
