Merle died at the age of 77 on Sunday June 14, 1998 at Fort Whipple V.A. Medical Center in Prescott. He was born on Wednesday, February 9, 1921 in Galt, IA. Merle was the son of William and Winifred (Cowan)Johnson.

Merle enlisted in the United States Marine Corps December 9, 1942 in Des Moines, IA. He served heroically in the Pacific Theater at Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, the Marianas Islands, Iwo Jima and the Volcano Islands. Merle returned home in 1945.

He lived in Nevada before moving to Ash Fork, AZ in 1989, then to Prescott, AZ. Before his retirement, Merle worked for a waste water treatment plant.

Merle is survived by a daughter Mrs. Judy (Johnson) Weatherford (William)of Georgetown, TN
