RIVERTON - A. "Marty" Aune, 56, of Riverton died at 9:20 p.m. on Monday, June 28, 2010, at St. John's Hospice.

Marty was born on August 23, 1953, in Springfield, the son of Alfred "Bud" and Evelyn Ford Aune. He married Paula Matherly in Springfield on September 22, 1976.

Marty was a proud craftsman whose work adorns the walls of literally hundreds of Illinois homes. He was an insatiable and self-taught student of local history, anthropology and archeology. Marty spent countless hours searching for and cataloguing local Native American artifacts, and had a collection of arrowheads, spear points, and axes that would rival any museums. Marty was a musician who would entertain family and friends for hours, holding his own with amateur and professionals alike. We are fortunate he left some studio recordings behind for us to remember him by.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marty was the loved and loving husband of Paula; proud and loving stepfather to Grant; grandfather to Lindsay, Trevor, Branden, and Kylie; great-grandfather to Lucas; brother to R. Kelly Aune and Ellen Meierkort; uncle to five nieces, seven nephews; nephew to three aunts; and cousin to many.

A gathering will be held at Marty and Paula's home starting at 2 p.m. on Friday July 2 for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Springfield Animal Protective League.

Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.
