Lawson Akens married Juanita B. Casteel on 24 Jul 1966 in McMinn County.

Akens, Lawson Monroe - age 71, of Sweetwater, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 19, 1997. Mr. Akens was a member and deacon of Murrays Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for 37 years. He was a veteran of U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict as a medic. Mr. Akens won the Bronze Star while serving his country. He was preceded in death by parents, Ollie and Minnie Veal Akens; two sisters and one brother. Survived by wife, Juanita Casteel Akens; son and daughter-in-law, Lawson M. Akens, Jr., and Jennifer Milligan Akens; one grandson, Lawson Drew Akens, all of Sweetwater, Tenn.; brother, James Lawson, Athens; two sisters, Gladys Johnson, Sweetwater, Ocie Golding, Tupelo, Miss. Funeral service are 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in Sweetwater Memory Chapel with Rev. Joe Caldwell officiating. Interment 2 p.m. Sunday in Sweetwater Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. prior to the funeral in Sweetwater Funeral Home Memory Chapel.
