Ex-LDS Temple Matron dies

Vera Christina Pfost Hart, former matron at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, died at home Dec. 17, 1988, of respiratory arrest.

She was born June 23, 1904, at Rexburg, to Fredrick and Christina Magdalena Waltz Pfost. She attended grade school in Hibbard and Rexburg, and graduated from high school there in 1918.

She graduated from Ricks High School in 1923, and from the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City in 1924.

She married Cecil Elmo Hart April 6, 1932, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He died June 27, 1987.

Mrs. Hart taught business classes at MacCammon High School in 1924-25. She worked as a secretary for the Utah Power and Light Co. in 1925-26 and 1928, and for Anderson Brothers Bank, later as First Security Bank as secretary from Sept. 5, 1928, to Oct. 4, 1934.

Mrs Hart served an LDS mission to the Eastern States from March 7, 1926 to March 23, 1928.

She held numerous teaching and leadership positions in the LDS ward an stake Primary, YWMIA, Sunday School, Relief Society and Stake Mission.

On Oct. 16, 1964 she and her husband were called by the LDS Church First Presidency to preside over the Paris, France, LDS Mission, until July 14, 1967.

From October 1970 through October 1975, she served as matron of the Idaho Falls LDS Temple while her husband served as temple president.

Ricks College awarded her an emeritus citation in social science on Oct. 18, 1975.

Mrs. Hart served 12 consecutive years as president of the Eastside School PTA, and was an officer in the Idaho Falls High School PTSA. She was a member of the Idaho Falls Music Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kent (Joyce H.) Taylor; two sons, H. Ray Hart and J.C. Hart, all of Idaho Falls; a sister, Florence P. Birch of Salmon; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Idaho Falls LDS Third Ward, 2025 Jennie Lee Drive, with Bishop Jay Foster officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Little Butte Annis Cemetery.

Funeral services are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and burial will be in the Little Butte Annis Cemetery.
