Ruth graduated as valedictorian of Marshfield High School's class of 1920. Her father Clarence had to support his mother and sister as a young man and could not attend college; it was his dream to help his children get into and through college. His three daughters Grace, Mabel, and Ruth all received teaching degrees.
After graduating from State Normal School in Framingham, Massachusetts, Ruth received a teaching degree. She worked out of Uxbridge, Massachusetts for a short time.
Ruth married Ralph Martin Burns on May 10th, 1923 in Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. She sewed her own wedding dress.
