Harry Sherwood Bentley, one of eight children of John Buzz Bentley and Edith May (Pierce) Bentley, was born on the family farm west of Oakland, Iowa. Sherwood enjoyed growing up on the farm and attending country school in Washington Township. He attended Oakland High School where he graduated in 1941. Sherwood began his life-long farming and livestock production career with his mother and brothers on the family farm west of Oakland.

On October 28, 1945, Sherwood and Marjorie Marie Chaney of Oakland were married at the Sharon Church west of Oakland. They made their home on the family farm and were blessed with their first daughter Marilyn. Sherwood, Marjorie and Marilyn moved to a farm in the Wesley Chapel neighborhood of Mills County, Iowa. It was here the family was completed with the birth of Bruce, Rodney, and Marlene. In 1950, Sherwood and Marjorie purchased a farm west of Macedonia, Iowa where they soon moved. Together, the family would develop an extensive livestock production and farming operation. They became members of the Macedonia United Methodist Church and Sherwood served as chairman of the church trustees. He served the youth of the community as a 4-H leader and the area as a member of the Macedonia Community Development Committee. He was a member of the Pottawattamie County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed his membership in the Pottawattamie County and National Cattlemen's Association and in 1995, was recognized as the Honorary Cattleman of the Year. Sherwood had a major interest in beef carcass evaluations with the Tri-County Steer Futurity and enjoyed going to livestock sales with his family and special friend Don Smith. Sherwood's favorite times however, were those spent with his family.

Sherwood and Marjorie had been married for 58 years when he died at his home on October 11, 2003. He had attained the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 14 days. Sherwood was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Orris Bentley, Walter Bentley, Edwin Bentley, John Bentley, and Donald Bentley.

Sherwood is survived by his wife Marjorie; children Marilyn Mickey of Carson, Bruce Bentley and his wife Ruby of Macedonia, Rod Bentley and Laura Timp of Macedonia, Marlene Richardson and her husband Terry of Carson; brother Kenneth Bentley of Minden, IA; sister Leona Coleman and her husband Ardath of Oakland; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
