Orris Winfield Bentley, age 94, died early Friday morning at the Montgomery County Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. He had been a resident at the Stanton Center for sometime.
Orris was born August 15, 1902 to John and Edith Pierce Bentley in Oakland, Iowa. He attended the Oakland School. About two years before he was married, Orris went to Pennsylvania and worked for the railroad.
Orris was married to Ruth Sowers on August 17, 1927, and to this union were born five children: Dwayne, Melva, Neil, Viola, and Vernelle. Ruth died in 1967. On February 18, 1978, orris was married to Dorothea Clark. Dorothea died in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his parents,; his two wives, Ruth and Dorothea; one daughter, Viola Starr; brothers, Walter, Edwin, John, and Donald.
Survivors include his children: Dwayne E. Bentley of Emerson, Melva L. Henders on Macedonia, Neil O. Bentley of Carson, Vernelle Ellis of Lincoln, Nebraska; one brother-in-law, Roger Starr of Council Bluffs; two brothers, Kenneth Bentley of Oakland and Sherwood Bentley of Macedonia. Also included is one sister, Leona Coleman of Oakland; step-children include Mildred Edwards of Altona, Iowa and Marvin Clark of Oakland.
These are 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Orris loved to spend hours visiting with people, he loved farming, including raising and breeding cattle. He farmed from 1955 to 1976, when he retired and moved into Macedonia. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and because of his job with the railroad, he enjoyed trains.
Funeral services were held at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, Rural Henderson, Iowa on Monday, January 20, 1997 at 2:00 p.m.
Visitation was at the Victh Funeral Home in Oakland, Iowa on Sunday, January 19, 1997 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Rural Henderson, Iowa.
