A photograph of my uncle 1st Lieutenant John Lee Smith 'Junior' comforting another soldier taken in the Haktong-ni area of South Korea by career combat news photographer Al Chang on August 28th 1950. In WW2 he was in the battle of Saipan and Tinian and was awarded the Air Medal, and the Distinguished Service Medal for Valor. General Macaurther awarded him the Bronze Star for his meritorious action in the bloody Okinawa campaign of April 1945. 1st Lieutenant John Lee Smith Junior was suffocated when his stepmother accidentally poured hot coffee down his breathing tube while he was recuperating from a car accident in Methodist hospital in Lubbock, Texas, USA on the 2nd of December 1959. He was 38 years old.
