The Little Nightcap (Story about Elizabeth's Grandmother)

The story of "The Little Nightcap" is well known to Michaux descendants. Briefly, it is as follows: Before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Jean Rochet attempted to get his youngest daughter, Susanne, to Amsterdam, Holland, where many refugees had fled to escape persecution and death. Among those who had escaped were two of his daughters, who had been kindly received by Christian friends. They wanted to write their father to send their little sister, Susanne, but fearing that their letters might fall into the hands of their persecutors, they instead wrote asking for him to send "the little nightcap" they had left behind.

After several unsuccessful attempts to get little Susanne out of France, her father arranged to have Susanne shipped in a large cask, (some call a wine crate or a hogshead), which was entrusted to a friendly sea-captain, who had the cask placed on board his ship. When they had sailed and were safely past the guards who were posted on vessels in the harbour, the cask was opened and Susanne was lifted out of her dark narrow chamber. She was then brought safely to Amsterdam, where her sisters received her with great joy.
