Charles left Anniston sometime after his mother, Tamar, died in 1888 and came to Birmingham. He married Anna Bell Moore, daughter of Thomas Louis Moore, in 1892. In the 1893 Birmingham City Directory his occupation was "Helper" at the Birmingham Rolling Mill. By 1900 he was living in the Pratt City area and a dairy operator/milkman.
He was involved in several fraternal organizations.
