Gertrude was the youngest daughter of Gustav and Caroline Widmayer Meyer. She graduated from Barrington High School (Barrington IL) when it was a 2 year school, with a total of three in her class. She attended Normal and obtained a teaching certificate and taught in a variety of schools.

She was a charter member and later president of the Barrington Women's Club, and a charter member also of the Barrington League of Women Voters. She participated actively in the formation of the Barrington Public Library, which was a Women's Club project and then served onthe library board for 17 years. She was instrumental in getting the first library built in Barrington.
