Ruth Schwemm Hardacre, a resident of John Knox Village since 1978, died Aug. 1, 2002 at age 97. She was born in Barrington on April 26, 1905. Her father, John Schwemm, was a livery stable owner and her mother, Gertrude Meyer Schwemm, a teacher before she married, was a homemaker.
A University of Illinois graduate, Mrs. Hardacre obtained her degree in 1926. She was Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, women's chairman of homecoming, and a cabinet member at the YWCA. In the spring of her senior year, Mrs. Hardacre was selected as the university's May Queen.
Following college graduating, Mrs. Hardacre worked in industrial relations at Public Service Company of Northern Illinois (later to become Commonwealth
Edison Company). There she met Gilbert "Gibby" Hardacre. They were married in Barrington Feb. 21, 1929, in her family home. Fourteen close friends and relatives attended the wedding.
In 1929 the newlyweds purchased their first home in Highland Park, Ill. The first of their three children, Philip, was born in 1934. Two younger sons died in infancy.
When her husband was promoted to head Commonwealth Edison's south division, they moved to Joliet, Ill. Gibby retired in 1976 and in 1978 they moved to John Knox Village, Pompano Beach, Fla., a retirement community. Gibby died in 1997 at age 95.
Mrs. Hardacre was active in her church, League of Women Voters, Woman's
Club, library board, county Red Cross, Rotary Anns, PEO, a charter member of a book club, worked in doctors' and dentists' offices, and was a volunteer in her community. She wore a smile continually and rarely complained about her health, being a constant source of encouragement to others. Mrs. Hardacre reflected a great love for her family.
She is survived by her son, Philip (Connie) of Mequon, Wis.; four grandchildren, Patricia Edgecomb of Dryden, N.Y., Maribeth Baker of Prairie du Sac, Wis., Carol Sheffield of Guinea, West Africa and Andrew of Shorewood, Minn.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her only sibling, Earl Schwemm.
