Born April 4, 1899, at Sherwood Forest in Charles City County, Mr. Tyler was the son of the late Judge David Gardiner Tyler, who was President's eldest son. Mr. Tyler never had a chance to meet his grandfather, who died in 1862 and who was President from 1841 to 1845.

Mr. Tyler was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, and earned his law degree at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. After several years of practicing law in Richmond, he became assistant state attorney general in 1934. He retained his post until his retirement in 1970.

An Army veteran of World War I and World War II, Mr. Tyler retired from the Reserves in 1955 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
