Alberta "Albina" Caruso was born in Newark, NJ in 1897, one of 12 children (9 living to adulthood) of Frank & Nicolina Caruso, who had immigrated from southern Italy in the 1880s. Raised in the old first ward Italian section of Newark, she obtained a teaching degree and taught elementry school in her old neigborhood (her youngest sisters, twins Florence and Stella, were among her pupils.) Alberta married Serafino "Barney" Federici, a US Postmaster & Democratic politician, in 1933 in Manhattan, NY, and eventually they retired to Spring Lake, NJ, where she died of Parkinson's disease in 1980.
