Aaron Fitzwater, the Rossville pioneer and retired farmer, who died at his home in that place last Sunday morning, had a unique Civil War record, he having according to report, fought on both sides, and wore both the blue and the gray during the great Civil War.

At the outbreak of the war between the states, Mr. Fitzwater lived in Virginia, where he owned a farm. He enlisted in the confederate army and served three months, then deserted and came north. Shortly afterwards he substituted for a drafted man and, donning the blue, shouldered a rifle and fought in defense of the union. After the war he came back north and later moved to near Rossville.

A quarter of a century afterwards he made his first visit to his former Virginia home, only to find that his farm had been sold for taxes and was beyond recovery. Mr. Fitzwater's sympathies were always with the union before and after the wa, and he drew a big pension from the government during his lifetime.
