By 1880, William J. Allen and wife, Alice, were the parents of Sidney, Allie, Lizzie, Mary, Watson and Thomas. Their residence was next door to his parents in Hampden, Prince Edward County Virginia. In 1920 a 16 year old grandson named Allen Capps, born in Virginia, is living with William and Kate.

It is believed that William J. Allen came from Franklin, Virginia, moved to Danville, Virginia then to North Carolina about 1894 with construction of the Southern Railway. He eventually settled in the Blanch community.
