Funeral services for Berchel Harris King, 85, a resident of Donley County since 1940, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, 1972, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Huffaker, pastor of the Nazarene Church in Little Rock, Arkansas and Rev. John Hansen, pastor of the Nazarene Church in Clarendon, officiating. Interment was in Citizens Cemetery under the direction of Murphy Funeral Home.
Mr. King died at 12 a.m. on Monday, September 18th, in Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born June 13, 1887 at Stephenville and married Melissie Elnora Griffin December 20, 1908 at Childress. He moved to Hall County from Childress County in 1937 and to Donley County in 1940. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Methodist Church and a former member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.
Survivors include seven daughters: Mrs. Jack Kindle of Childress, Mrs. Scotty Tolbert and Mrs. Granville Wood both of Amarillo, Mrs. Lester Shields of Clarendon, Mrs. Mayo Black of Ft. Stockton, Mrs. Joe Adams of Fritch, Mrs. Weldon Tims of Muleshoe; six sons: Fred and Raymond King both of Clarendon; Euel and Claude King both of Childress, James King of Amarillo, A.K. King of Frtich [sic]; four sisters: Mrs. Etta Williams, Mrs. Cloyce Holman, Mrs. Sylvester, White and Mrs. Joe Hicks all of Childress; thirty nine grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren.
Bearers were grandsons-in-law; Paul Bratcher, Harry Burrier, Danny Stone, Jerry Robison, James Mahaffey, Buddy Allen, Bob McCombs, and George Moore.
