The family was so poor and he was a restless teenager. When his trombone was stolen from their home it was the last straw for him. He left and joined the army. It was hard on the family. He left the church for a while.
He married Marie Bosch and had 3 children. They divorced in 1937, the same year his father died. He came back to the church...went up to Moscow, Idaho to school and hung out with my dad and their older brother, Glen.
He settled in Spokane, Washington, went in to the post office service, met and married Inis Fiefield and had 1 more child, my cousin, Margaret Butler Stanton. He allowed Marie's new husband, Reed Overson, to adopt the children as he was too poor to fight a legal battle.
His new wife, Inis, had 2 children by her first husband, Don Kussee. Uncle Don raised them as his own. Both those kids consider my Uncle Don to be their father.
As a teen, he had a mastoid operation and in later years developed giantism (acromeglia).
He was a wonderful, kind and loving man who was forever sorry for the sins of his youth.
