Maryland Governor. Educated at St. John's College, he graduated from Charlotte Hall Academy, in 1804 and earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, in 1807. He practiced medicine in St. Mary's County, Maryland, served as justice of the peace of St. Mary's County, (1808-12), was justice of the Levy Court in St. Mary's County, (1810-12) and judge of the Orphan's Court in St. Mary's County, (1811-12). During the War of 1812, he served as a Major in the 4th Maryland Cavalry and for his service, was brevetted a Major General. After the war, he resumed medical practice and served as a member of the Maryland State Senate, (1824-30). In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Jackson, the 23rd Maryland Governor, serving until 1836. While in office, he take measures for the establishment of a State Militia, railroad construction progressed throughout the state, a cholera epidemic was dealt with and appropriations were made for general education for public schools was advocated for. After serving three terms, he lived in retirement until his death.
