George Ross Gillette, 92, of Pensacola, died, Sunday, June 20, 2010 after a prolonged illness.
George grew up in Declo, Idaho and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in pharmacy from Idaho State University. He came to Pensacola to train as a navy pilot, earning his wings in 1942.
In 1943, George married the former Evelyn Richerson. The couple owned and operated Gillette Drugs in Pensacola for almost 50 years.
George's hobbies included fishing, backyard gardening and boxing. He founded the Northwest Florida Amateur Boxing Association and coached Pensacola youths in the sport of boxing. He served as past president of the Suburban West Rotary Club, Toastmasters Club and the Escambia County Pharmaceutical Association. He served on the board of directors of the Florida Hospital Association, and as a trustee of the University Hospital. He also originated and was the first president of the Seville Square Settlers Organization.
George is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Evelyn Gillette; son, Ron Gillette of Pensacola; daughter, Verona Kendall of Savannah, GA; daughter, Michelle Sellers of Suffolk, VA; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also surviving are a brother, Frank Gillette, and a sister, Renee Clark.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Reverend Larry Mosley officiating.
Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
BAYVIEW FISHER-POU CHAPEL, 3351 Scenic Highway, is in charge of arrangements.
