Joseph Culbertson was a son of:
Dr. Joel DeWitt (1816 - 1890)
and
Rachel Ann Mairs (1823 - 1912)

As several of his siblings did, he married a McCullough. She was a daughter of John McCullough and Elizabeth Bell and her name was Elizabeth McCullough (1844 - 1938).

Their children were:

Walter DeWitt
1867–1868
(See link below.)

John Wallace DeWitt MD
1869–1947
(See link below.)
m. Nettie Chase

Emery T DeWitt
1871–1879
(See link below.)

Laura Mae DeWitt
1872–1943
(See link below.)
m. Warren Hamilton

Martha Elizabeth DeWitt
1874–1955
(See link below.)
m. Andrew Wilson

Blanche Clara DeWitt
1876–1880
(See link below.)

Joel C DeWitt
1878–1887
(See link below.)

Nora M DeWitt
1880–1884
(See link below.)

Eunice Virginia DeWitt
1882–1967
m John W Grigsby

Ernest McCullough DeWitt
1886–1961
m. Julia ?

It is sad to see how many children they lost between the late 1870s and late 1880s. They are all buried in McCullough Cemetery in Sullivan Co., MO. (See links below this biography commentary.)

Does anyone know where Eunice and Ernest are buried?

While living in Sullivan Co, Missouri during the Civil War, Joseph participated in the actions of the Forty-fourth Regimental Infantry begninning in 1864.

I have not been able to locate where Joseph was buried. Some cemetery near San Francisco in the city of Antioch, California holds his remains. Hopefully someone will stumble across the grave. It has been a mystery for many years.

1888 Biography:

1888 History of Adair, Sullivan, Putnam and Schuyler counties, Missouri, from the earliest times to the present : together with sundry personal, business and professional sketches and numerous family records

Joseph C. DeWitt was born in Jackson County, W. Va., in 1845, and is a son of Dr. Joel and Rachel Ann (Mairs) DeWitt. Joseph was brought to Sullivan County when but an infant, and received his education at the common schools of the neighborhood, making his home with his parents until the breaking out of the late war. In the summer of 1864 he enlisted in Company E, Forty-fourth Regiment, Missouri Infantry, and served until September, 1865, when he was discharged at St. Louis. He participated in the battles of Franklin, Nashville, Spanish Fort, Fort Blakeley and Mobile. At the first named battle he received a flesh wound in his hand. February 10, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth McCullough, daughter of Maj. John McCullough. Mrs. DeWitt was born in Sullivan County, Mo., in 1845, and to her union with Mr. DeWitt, ten children have been born: Walter, Wallace, Emery, May, Mattie, Blanch, Joel, Nora, Eunice and Ernest. After his marriage, Mr. DeWitt resided upon the old homestead until 1871, when he moved upon the farm where he now resides. He is now the owner of 840 acres of land in the home place, and eighty acres on the prairie. He resides in a fine large brick residence which cost $3,500. He is one of the most substantial men of the county, and devotes most of his attention to stock raising, having about 200 head of stock each year. He is a member of the G. A. E., and in politics is a Republican.
