McKinley, most of his life known as "Mack", was the son of George Jacob Harbaugh and his wife Mary Katherine Kretsinger. By all accounts he was a quiet, gentle man. He took great store in books, and according to one of his granddaughter's had the complete works of Mark Twain in lovely bound editions. Mack met Elizabeth Finlayson and they married December 23, 1883. Sadly their first child, Florence Bell died at the age of 4. They had three other children, including Loretta, Ralph, and Katherine. Mack initially made his living as a teacher, but later became a confectioner or candymaker. He had notebooks full of recipes for heavenly confections, including divinity, fudge, suckers and assorted hard candies. He sold his candies at fairs, and later in Kenosha in a candy store on Sheridan Drive. He lived simply, and was adored by his children. He eventually developed a motor disability, and spent his final days in a nursing home, passing away in 1932.
