Funeral Services to Be Held Monday
Claud C. Philo 78, died at 2:35 p. m. yesterday at his home, 900 South Sixth street. In failing health for several years, he had been in a serious condition since suffering a heart attack two months ago, and had been a patient for a time at Mercy hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at ' the chapel' of the Potts Funeral home, with the, Rev. G. J. Dhodes of the Grace Methodist Church officiating, and burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
An oil field worker, Mr. Philo was employed for a number of years in the Bolton oil and gas field, and he had lived at Havana, Delaware, Okla., and Wayside. While in Havana, he was superintendent of the Vulcan oil and Gas company.
The son of Freeman B. and Celestia Overaker Philo, He was born September 8, 1867 at Leslie, Michigan. He came to Independence with his family wlien he was a small child. When he was a young man he went to Michigan to work, but returned to Independence a few years later.
His marriage to Miss Hattie May Kelch took place here on November 13, 1889. He was living in Wayside when he gave up work in the oil field, and for three years he served as custodian of the Wayside high school. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary while residing at Wayside.
He came to Independence following his retirement six years ago.
Survivors include, his wife, of the home; four sons, Floyd B. Philo of Oakland, Calif., Lloyd C. Philo of Encampment, Wyo., William T. Philo of Hamilton, Kansas, and Ray C. Philo of Coffeyville; one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Mersereau, of Bauxite, Ark.; one sister, Mrs. Addie Schmidt 312 North Twelfth; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three daughters, a son, and a brother.
Mr. Philo was a member of the Grace Methodist church, and in earlier years had been active in the Odd Fellow lodge.
