John W. Spurling, 79 of Edinburgh, passed away on Thursday, March 4 at Johnson Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Kentucky on Aug. 5, 1930 to parents George A. and Edith (Bright) Spurling. he is survived by his spouse Alice (Wells) Spurling, and the two were married on July 1, 1977. He was preceded in death by spouse Betty Maxine (Clapp) Spurling in 1971, and the two had been married on Feb. 14, 1956.

Survivors include: spouse Alice Spurling; son John W. (Linda) Spurling, Jr., of Greensburg; daughter Anita (John) Lambert of Muncie; stepson Anthony (Angie) Wells of Shelbyville; stepdaughters Sheila (Mauri) Sasher of South Carolina and Tereasa (Brent) Cheatham of Yorktown; brother George A. Spurling, Jr., of Shelbyville; sister Genevieve Kelly of Shelbyville; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first spouse, brother James Spurling, sister Geneva Potter and son Jeffrey Lee Spurling.

John w. Spurling's usual occupation was a welder at GE/Wellman's of Shelbyville. He worked there for 25 years before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the United Kennel Club and Shelby County Coon Hunters Associaton. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 at the Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 8 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Van Pelt cemetery in Shelby County with Rev. David Humphrey officiating. Memorials may be made to Shelby County Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association care of the funeral home. Graveside military services will be conducted by local veteran organizations. John was an avid coon hunter, trapper and breeder of coon and squirrel dogs.
