SERGEANT BLUFF -- Lewis P. McLarty, 82, of Sergeant Bluff died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. McLarty was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Holly Springs, Iowa, the son of Cecil and Rubie (Bowman) McLarty. He was raised in the Hornick and Luton, Iowa, area, graduating from Luton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the European Theatre and in Japan. He had lived in the Salix, Iowa, area prior to moving to Sergeant Bluff in 1957.

He married Loretta F. McKinney on April 13, 1958, in Okoboji, Iowa. She died July 25, 1997, in Sergeant Bluff. He was employed with Northwest Iowa Telephone Co. for more than 36 years, working in various capacities. He retired in October 1985.

He was an active longtime member of the American Legion Post in Sergeant Bluff. He loved to fish, hunt, play cards and watch the Chicago Cubs. He had served on the city council for the city of Sergeant Bluff.

He is survived by a son, Ed (Deb) McLarty of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Marilyn (Robert) Kilbride of Lincoln, Neb.; two stepsons, Richard (Patty) Barker of Sioux City and Ralph Barker of Iowa; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; and a sister.

A memorial has been established in his name in care of the family.
