Mary Agness Sullivan was born in 1872 to John L. Sullivan and Sarah E. Shaw. She is believed to have been born in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri, near Springfield where her father worked for the railroad. However, the family soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and there is conflicting information over whether Mary was born before or after the move. Mary's mother died in St. Louis, Missouri, about 1878, purportedly due to effects of polluted air in the factory where she was working. Since her father was a railroad man, it is likely he could not care for his six-year-old daughter, and Mary was sent to live with her mother's parents in Camden County, Missouri.

When Mollie grew up, she married Frank L. Bookhout in Camden County, Missouri and had thirteen children between 1890 and 1917. They bought a farm in Camden County where the current Camdenton Airport is located, and their children were born there and attended Myetta School. Before 1920, however, they purchased another farm in Irontown on the Osage River in Jasper Township, Camden County and moved. The children attended Dry Ridge School there.

With such a large family to support, both Frank and Mollie worked to supplement the family income. Frank hauled freight from Lebanon to the Linn Creek shipping port on the river, and Mollie ran what we would today call a "Bed and Breakfast", providing temporary lodging and meals for travelers.

In 1949 Mollie was widowed and living in Montreal, Missouri with her daughter, Etta, when she died of kidney failure. She was buried in Decaturville Cemetery beside her husband near the Bookhout's long-time home.
