Emily Layman Crawford, the daughter of Jacob Layman and Sarah Wilson, was born on May 7, 1837 in Grayson County, Kentucky. She was the wife of John Wesley Crawford, the son of James Marion Crawford and Catherine Harned. John and Emily were married on April 1, 1860. By August 17th of that year the family lived in Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky and consisted of: John, a farmer, age 23; and Emily, a housewife, age 22; also shown with them were his brothers Jackson, age 21, and Benjamin, age 27, who were working as farm laborers.
By July 25, 1870 Emily and John were still in Leitchfield with 5 children: daughters, M. E. (Mary), age 8; M. E. (Martha), age 7; C. T.(Cora), age 3, and Malissa, age 1; and a son W. T.(William), age 5. At the time of the 1880 census of Millwood, Frayson County, Kentucky, the family consisted of: John W., age 43; Emma, age 42; Mary, age 18; Cora S., age 14; Lissie (Malissa), age 11; Harvey W., age 8; Sallie, age 6, and Jessie, age 1. Daughter Martha E. died on February 5, 1873; a son Willie S. (b. April 25, 1864) died on May 29, 1978. Martha and Willie were buried in the Kefauver Cemetery on Kefauver Cemetery Road in Grayson County, Kentucky.
John Wesley Crawford died on July 21, 1913. He was buried as John Wess Crawford with his children in the Kefauver Cemetery on Kefauver Cemetery Road in Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky. Emily joined them there after her death on March 16, 1917.
