Jacob Layman was the fourth of the fifteen children of Michael Layman and Sarah Storm, whose name is often shown as Storms. He was the grandson of Joachim Layman, who came to Louisville, Kentucky from Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1798.

Jacob's maternal grandfather was John Storm, who served on General George Washington's staff during the Revolutionary War. He came to Kentucky after the war and settled in what was then known as Nelson County, Virginia – District of Kentucky. On September 14, 1790 John Storm and his wife Hannah sold 100 acres on Beech Fork to Edward Montgomery. Both Jacob Layman and John Storm were living in the area that became Hardin County, Kentucky in 1792, Ohio County, Kentucky in 1798 and finally Grayson County, Kentucky in 1810.

Jacob Layman, who was known as Jake, was born March 27, 1810 in the newly created Grayson County. He married Sarah Wilson on May 4, 1835 in Ohio County, Kentucky. Their security was James Wilson. They were the parents of

The family lived in Leitchfield Precinct at the time of the 1860 and 1870 Grayson County census records. Sarah died there on January 1, 1868 and Jacob followed her on August 27, 1878. They were both buried in the Old Caney Cemetery near Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky where many other members of their Layman relatives rest.
