He went by Willis and "Bud" when he was young. Many of the family called him "Babe." The 1880 census shows him as "William"(sic) living next door to his parents. His wife Sarah was from Georgia.

"Social and Personal …J.W. (Babe) Walls has been seriously ill for several days with pneumonia."
