Robert Clyde Hayes, age 89, of Centerville, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 26, 2005, at Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center in Centerville. He was born the son of Clyde E. and Mary Elpha(Johnson))Hayes on March 21, 1916 in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville Community Schools in 1933.

Bob was united in marriage with Virginia Rovn September 19, 1948 in Armstrong, Iowa. He was employed for a time by the Iowegian and later at Iowa Southern Utilities for 46 1/2 years where he was supervisor of Advertising and Sales Promotion at the time of his retirement in 1981. He enlisted in the Air Corps during World War ll and served from January 1, 1942 to January 21, 1946. He was stationed in the United States until 1945 at which time he was transfered to the Infantry and sent to the Philippines and Japan. He was an avid sports fan and participated in golf, bowling, softball, and baseball. Robert was a member of Drake Avenue Christian Church, a 50 year member to the Jackson Lodge #42, a former member of Elks Lodge #940, a former member of the Appanoose County Country Club, American Legion Post #214, a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Toastmasters and Indian Hills Booster Club. He also worked with the Boy Scouts.

Bob was preceded in death: by his parents,; a brother, William Hayes; three sisters, Mary Long, Virginia Hayes, and Eva Hayes; a brother-in-law, Joe Long; two nephews, Jerry Long and John Hayes; a niece, Linda Cardani; and a great nephew, Mike Long.

He is survived by: his wife Virginia Hayes; two daughters, Melissa Swett, and husband Rick, of Plano TX, and Melinda Kohorst, and husband Alan, of Destrehan, LA; two grandchildren, John Kohorst and Aaron Swett; brother Jack Hayes and wife, Jane of Parker, CO; a sister, Shirley Cardani, and husband Joe, of Centerville; a sister-in-law, Joe Ann Hayes of Centerville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home at 10 am Friday, October 28, 2005 with Rev. Joan White officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville, IA with full military rites by Centerville Veterans organizations. Visitation will be Thursday, October 27, 2005 from 1-8 with family present from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or the Drake Avenue Christian Church.
