Hugh enlisted as a Private on October 22, 1861 in Company K, 55th Infantry Regiment Illinois on October 31, 1861. Hugh served in the Civil War with his brother Robert and many of their regiment were killed at Shiloh. He was lucky enough to survive. However, he seems to have been wounded in one of the battles in which he fought as he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps, which was a corps of soldiers who were partially disabled, but still able to perform duty.
