Obituary
The Tribune, Junction City, Kansas, July 1, 1880 (my copy does not have the page no.)

DIED.
McVAY--At his home on Lyons creek in this
county, early this morning, Thomas P. Mc-
Vay, aged 67 years, 6 months, and eighteen
days.

Mr. McVay was an honest Christian
man and one of our most valuable and
esteemed citizens. Though not a robust
man, yet his death takes the community
by surprise, and saddens the hearts of
friends and relatives; and all who knew
him.
The deceased was born in Ohio, and
came to Kansas about thirteen years ago.
He has lived a straightforward, upright
life, as a farmer, raised a large family,
and enjoyed the esteem of every one.
Most of the children have died from lung
complaints, but a son and daughter and
their mother still survive to mourn their
heavy loss.
The funeral services will be conducted
to-day at the residence, by Rev. Mr.Zim-
merman, of this city, and the remains
will be interred in the Morris Cemetery,
on Lyons creek.

----

As suggested by the obituary, of the large family Thomas raised, only eldest son Robert (1835-1909) and Martha Jane (1843-1889) would outlive their father and mother. Thomas's wife, Henrietta West McVay, would die three years after his death, in 1883. Only Robert would exceed his father's lifespan, dying at the age of 74.
