James was born in Jefferson City, MO to William Floyd and Catherine Hentges Carel. He was the oldest of eight sons. They moved to Oklahoma in 1916, eventually settling in Union City. He moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1936. On December 27, 1939, he married Margaret Anderson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in El Reno, OK. They returned to Oklahoma in 1943. From 1943-1973 he worked at Tinker Air Force Base. He was active in his church and the Knights of Columbus. He held various offices in the Knights of Columbus, including Grand Knight of Council #1038 and was State Deputy for Oklahoma in the mid 1960's for two years. He and Margaret were married for 60 years until his death. He had five children, seven granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren.
