Obituary for Irene Elder Painter from The Quill, La Harpe, Illinois (March 1965):

"Mrs. Ray Painter Dies Sunday at 54
Terre Haute Woman's Death Saddens the Entire Community
Of infrequent parallel is the family and community grief attending the death in La Harpe hospital at 5:12 P.M. on Sunday, March 7, 1965 of Mrs. Ray Painter, 54-year-old Terre Haute wife and mother.

"Her passing, while unexpected, terminated a rapid and implacable health decline which the best of medical science and the utmost effort of her loved ones had sought vainly to reverse or even retard. She became ill in late January of this year and was flown to the Mayo Brothers Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota on February 1 for exhaustive tests and two major surgical operations.

"With her through the supreme trials of brain surgery and the subsequent precarious period of recuperation and further surgical efforts to arrest the relentless spread of the malady which ultimately caused her death, were the husband and her elder children, as well as others of her family from widely scattered points over the country.

"Returning home last Wednesday morning, Mrs. Painter remained only about a day before her condition required her hospitalization here. The last decline came with suddenness and in defiance of further efforts to save her life.

"Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. tomorrow (Thursday) at the Banks and Beals funeral home in La Harpe, with Rev. R. J. Weiss of the Terre Haute Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery.

"Winifred Irene Elder Painter was born at Beloit, Kansas on June 2, 1910 to William B. and Zora B. (Ornduff) Elder. She moved with her parents as a girl to Macomb and completed her secondary school education at Macomb High School. She was graduated from Western Illinois University in 1933 and later that same year from a professional course at Moler School of Beauty in Chicago.

"Mrs. Painter pursued careers both in teaching and cosmetology before her marriage at Palmyra, Missouri on November 14, 1937 to Ray Scott Painter. The couple established their first home together in La Harpe, moving two years later to Terre Haute, where they have since resided.

"A woman of endearing charm and personality, Mrs. Painter's energies led her into many areas of educational, social and civic activity directed largely through her devotion to the interests of her home and children. She was a member of the La Harpe Order of Eastern Star, the W. S. C. S. of the Terre Haute Methodist church, the Terre Haute Thursday Club and the Terre Haute Methodist church. She also had been active as a 4-H leader in recent years.

"Her untimely death is a crushing blow to the husband, Ray S. Painter, their five children, Mrs. Mike (Diana) McKinnon, of Terre Haute, Mrs. Lynn (Jean) Dougherty of Tucson, Arizona, Betty, Joseph and James, all at home; a brother, William V. Elder of La Harpe, five sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Duke of Ursa, Mrs. Kenneth (Ann) Finchum of Camp Point, Mrs. Henry (Carol) Churchill of Colchester, Mrs. Wendell (Alberta) Bushnell of Blandinsville and Mrs. Fay (Enid) Kilgore of Sarasota, Florida; three grandchildren and 18 nieces and nephews."
