Bessie was the third child of the Reverend W. Kelley Houck and Nina Virginia Nelson. She looked very much like her mother, and was the gentle older sister.

She married Odus G. Daves in 1913. Bessie developed kidney disease, and became an invalid near the end of her life.

Odus and Bessie had twins who died at birth. She had no surviving children. Her husband died suddenly two months before her death.
