She was born on April 16, 1921, the third of six children to Martin John and Christine (Weisler) Hoebel-heinrich in St. Helena, Nebraska.
Evelyn grew up on the family farm in Cedar County, Nebraska, attended elementary school there, and high school in Yankton, South Dakota, and received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College.
She married Percy Ballinger on September 17, 1946, at St. Boniface Church in Menominee, Nebraska, and has been a resident of The Dalles, Oregon since 1946.
Evelyn taught elementary school in Cedar County, Nebraska, and also worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at the Triple A in Hartington, Nebraska. A member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Barbara's Circle and the Altar Society, she enjoyed raising and teaching her family, bookkeeping for Percy's business, many church activities, homemaking, baking, canning fruits and making preserves.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, Reynold Hoebelheinrich of Fordyce, Nebraska; sister Cyrilla Jones of Hartington, Nebraska; her husband of 60 years, Percy Ballinger of The Dalles, Oregon; children Marilyn and Ron Berti of Portland, Oregon, Carol Jean Woodard of Auburn, Washington, John Ballinger and Debbie Lapo of Wenatchee, Washington, Jim and Libby Ballinger of The Dalles, Oregon, Allen and Marcel Ballinger of Bellevue, Washington, Mike and Colleen Ballinger of The Dalles, Oregon, Paul and Susan Ballinger of Wenatchee, Washington, Teresa and Stuart Murray of Boise, Idaho, Mary and Rich Murray of The Dalles, Oregon; and twenty-three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A viewing/visitation was held on Sunday, August 5, 2007, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home. Recitation of the Rosary was held on Sunday, August 5, 2007, at 7 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be held today (Monday), August 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, followed by a committal service at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, with Rev. Todd Unger officiating. Arrangements are in care of Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home.
