She was born on Feb. 21, 1903, in Nickelsville (Scott County), a daughter of the late Dr. Joshua Milbourn and Effa May (Addington) Dougherty.
Mrs. Arehart attended the University of Virginia and James Madison University. For 25 years she taught in the Nickelsville and Augusta County Public School Systems.
She was the oldest member of Bethel Presbyterian Church for many years, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. She was Circle Chairwoman, worked with the Youth Fellowship for at least 10 years, and was flower chairwoman for 18 years. The women of the church presented a Life Membership pin to her in recognition of her dedication and good works for the church.
She was a member of the Tuesday Club of Augusta County. She was also presented an honorary National Membership pin from Country Gardeners' Garden Club.
Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1959.
Family members include a son, Laurence A. Arehart Jr., and his wife, Patsy, of Colby, Kan.; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Smith, and her husband, Dale C., of Staunton; four grandchildren, Dr. Dale C. Smith Jr., and his wife, Tara, Christy Ferguson and her husband, Steve, Douglas C. Smith and his wife, Jill, and Scott D. Arehart and his wife, Kerry; five great-grandchildren, Jack Ferguson, Katherine Ferguson, Tyler Ferguson, Ethan Arehart, and Taylor Arehart; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Out of 11 children, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by six brothers, J. M. Dougherty, Leland Dougherty, Dr. Harry L. Dougherty, Dr. J. Milbourn Dougherty, Lucian M. Dougherty, and George B. Dougherty; and four sisters, Bessie Money, Nannie Carter, Madge Holt, and Mabel Dougherty.
A graveside service was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery; and a memorial service celebrating her life followed in the church, with the Rev. Clifford D. Caldwell officiating.
The family received friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Libby A. and Dale C. Smith, Howardsville Road, Staunton, and those desiring called at the Henry Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested that those desiring please make memorials to the Bethel Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 563 Bethel Green Road, Staunton, VA 2440l.
