"August Sturgis - It is with extreme pain that we announce the death of Augustus Justinus Sturgis, a life-long resident of Lititz and vicinity. There is scarcely a boy or girl, man or woman, in Lititz who was not acquainted with "August," as he was familiarly called.
He died at about 1 o'clock on Wednesday morning, after much pain and suffering. About two weeks ago, Mr. Sturgis was engaged in cutting up a willow tree which had blown down at the Spring grounds, when, it is supposed, he contracted a cold, which lead to pneumonia, which was the cause of his death.
During sickness he frequently spoke of death, believing that he would never recover. He was ready to die, wished for the end, and shortly before breathing his last spoke words of confort to those who surrounded him.
Deceased was born in Lititz on the 12th day of November, 1815.
He learned the trade of a potter and also manufactured clay smoke pipes. In March 1850, he was married to Fanny Brubaker and lived on a farm near Warwick. Later, he farmed a small tract of land in Warwick.
He then moved to Lititz. As a member of the Moravian Church from boyhood, he never neglected his church and the duties connected therewith."
