John Dallas Collins, son of Hiram and Mary Collins was born in a log cabin, east of Centerville, Appanoose county, Iowa, and died at his home in Bussey. He was bedfast only a few days and only six days before death was in Lovilia visiting friends.
Mr. Collins was reared in Appanoose county and on August 6, 1864 enlisted in Co. G, 42nd Missouri Infantry. He was discharged June 26,1864. He was a National member of the G.A.R.and was active in this organization.
He had been a familiar person in the Lovilia Memorial Day services for years.
On May 28, 1885 he was married to Rosanna Tolbert of Eldon at West Grove, Iowa. To this union was born 3 sons and 1 daughter all dead except Elmer J. of Des Moines. Mrs. Collins died in 1928. Joseph, Lula and William are the deceased children.
The family moved to lovilia in 1909 and Mr. Collins operated a mill there for a few years. the family later lived on a farm west of town. from here they moved to Hamilton and in 1920 moved to Bussey where he had since lived.
During the past 5 years he had been cared for by his grandson Farris Southern and his wife Leota Chance Southern.
